HMA Music Lesson Subsidy Program

Each year, the HMA assists several students in covering costs of private music lessons. Private lessons are incredibly important for aspiring musicians, and many cannot afford lessons. Students submit an application for the program at a certain time in the spring, and directors choose which students will receive the subsidy. The HMA contributes to the students’ lessons by working directly with the teachers.

Huron Music Association Private Music Lesson Scholarship Program Application Information:

Please Read
The HMA Private Music Lesson Scholarship Program was created to assist students in the Huron Music Program who are seeking to enhance their music education by taking private lessons outside of school, but encounter barriers. This program helps match students to the type of lesson assistance most needed to overcome these barriers.

In addition to our Scholarship Program, we are also including private lesson support through the Peer Private Lesson program. This will allow us to provide support that helps overcome financial and transportation barriers for our Huron music students while continuing to build and strengthen relationships in the Huron Community.

  1. Private Lessons through the Peer Private Lessons Program are free and held at Huron High School. The mentors are accomplished student volunteers that are leaders in the program who are committed to helping their peers.
  2. The HMA Private Lesson Scholarship Program awards students $25-30 towards lessons with a teacher of their choice, up to $500-600 for the school year.

Based on the information given in your application, we will help find the best fit for you.

We will assist the Peer Private Lesson organizations to help pair each student with a teacher/mentor. If the student already has a private teacher that they are working with they may indicate that on their application form.

Interested students should complete and submit the application including the short essay before the deadline on Tuesday, October 18th. The short essay should tell us why you are deserving of scholarship assistance for private lessons. Please be sure to also include information regarding financial need, as well as a statement about what taking private instruction means to you.

The following are important points regarding the program:

  • The lessons need to be taken during this academic year.
  • Students are expected to attend lessons regularly, at least twice a month.
  • Each Student is accountable to the school music director regarding practicing and lesson attendance.
  • If the student drops out of his/her music class at Huron, the student will be dropped from the scholarship program.
  • Use of the private lesson program will be reviewed in January 2025.

The Music Lesson Subsidy Liaison is Mr. Evaristo Rodriguez. Please contact him with questions about the program. Mr. Rodriguez can be reached by email.
